Okay so we know that there was originally no Alicorn's in equestria. In friendship is magic we see that we have many Alicorn's and an old tale about one. Celestia and Luna are Alicorn's so are their parents, so basically the original rulers of equestria lived long before the thousands of years Celestia and Luna were around for. Which also means that princess Amore, Candace's mom who was a queen and a unicorn lived before Celestia and Luna were around. Luna and Celestias parents probably knew Amore, but then how are Celestia and Luna's parents Alicorn's but Amore isn't? Well here's the thing Amore probably did live before Luna and Celestias parents, but then how would Candace be her daughter? Well my thought is that Candace isn't a direct descendant of Amore.
In my little pony Gen 6 make your mark, we see queen haven isn't an alicorn she's a Pegasus and Alicorn's are no longer exist. I'll let you think about all that as I explain why spike looks different in gen 6 then in gen4.
Spike in the beginning of friendship is magic is a baby dragon but at the last episode he is a big buff dragon but still stands on two legs. In gen 6 we see spike looks like a real dragon on all fours and I believe that this is evolution that the dragons adapted to new circumstances. But why is twilight and everyone else no longer around? Not even discord from what I remember. I think that all those villains probably passed, maybe some disaster struck and discord and twilight and flurry heart and candece are trapped in the chaos realm. Now the main 6 probably did pass of old age, I think either the producers of the show completely forgot about the og lore or Twilight and Flurry heart used all their magic and lost their powerful alicorn forms.

I have no idea why the producers didn't continue with luster dawn, so I don't know what happened to luster dawn. I sadly don't have access to gen 6 due to the fact that YouTube doesn't have the episodes so I barely remember the lore in the new series.
