What's it for though? Why not just have a data group that can hold and retrieve information in any order?

It's a data type that holds multiple instances of data (integer, character, string which is a series of characters together which is why it's called a string, color, other stacks, an array of things, 2d point, etc.) in a specific order, and when you add an item to it it's put at the end (which is referred to as the "top" of the stack) and when an item is removed it is always taken as the item at the top of the stack and it is retrieved instead of just deleted. So that type of sequence type is called last-in-first-out which means the last item in is always the first taken out. A really good analogy if you're a person that can go off-topic a lot (like me, having adhd) is a "stack" being made with the initial item being the topic you start off with when talking to another person. The item at the top is always the topic you're currently talking about. When you go on a tangent and start a topic based on what you were talking about at the time would add that topic to the top of the stack. So in order to go back to the topic you were at before you went off topic you'll have to finish the off-topic one which would be you taking the top item off the stack making the top item the previous topic. Then to completely finish your entire conversation you'll have to take all tangent topics from the initial topic (the first item added) then finish the initial topic taking it off making the stack empty and your ridiculously rabbit-hole-infested conversation finished. XD
